#GivingTuesday is a global movement that focuses on encouraging people to give back to the community. New York’s 92nd Street YMCA and the United Nations Foundation kicked off the movement in 2012. Giving Tuesday is always the week after Thanksgiving; this year it will be November 28.

Donate Used Goods
Many of us are fortunate enough this year to possibly get new clothes, or even money/gift cards in order to buy new clothes. So, why not put those older clothes to good use? In the colder weather, anything is appreciated. Even a few tee shirts (though we might not think so) can do wonders when layered together. And, sadly, Americans recycle or donate only 15% of their used clothing. The rest? That usually ends up in landfills.
Homeless shelters are always in need of blankets, coats, gloves and hats. Animal rescues will happily accept your towels and sheets. There are options for professional wear your employees no longer need that can go to men and women who are trying to advance their career after trying circumstances. Refugee centers are in need of dishes, furniture, and household goods for families building a new life.
Creating A Meaningful Hashtag
Using a company specific hashtag can help encourage employees and get them involved! It’s easy to set up a feed and get the participation flowing. Reinforce this by following some of your favorite charities or nonprofits and getting involved in their hashtags as well. Some of the more notable ones are #DoGood (The Do Good Movement), #GiveMoreTogether (MatchMe.org), and our very own #CGgives, not to mention #GivingTuesday of course. Get the team together and see what you can come up with! This is particularly useful if your company has more than one location or you have remote workers.
Brand For Donations
When it comes to donation pages, branding is key. Employees have been found to give 15% more to branded fundraising pages, and they give 38% more over time! Use this to make your giving even more impactful. Include photos of any past volunteer events you’ve held, or even just employee quotes about why they think giving is so important. Other useful features include a leaderboard, a counter towards your company goal and updates that align or hook up to your employees’ social accounts.
Double Down On A Cause That Matters to Your Company
This is probably the most important element of creating an incredible #GivingTuesday - finding a cause that speaks to your employees, your company, and your clients. What do they hold dear? What would your target base be most interested in? That is where you will find something you can really make a difference in. In fact, 90% of global citizens think companies should leverage their unique assets like people, products and knowledge to support community needs.
If your company is already committed to a cause, you could increase the company match or launch a dollars for doers campaign on Giving Tuesday.
